About South Africa


   The diverse nation of South Africa is located on the southern tip of Africa and has a population of about 50 million people with the capital city of Pretoria home to about 1.7 million of them. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east.

   The country was given partial independence from Great Britain in 1910 and became a republic back in 1961.There are 11 official languages, including English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, and Sotho. However, you shouldn’t have any problems if you speak English only. Some of the other major centers are Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Darwin, George, Kimberly, Bloemfontein, East London, Richards Bay, Coffee Bay, Port St. Johns, Nelspruit, and Port Elizabeth.

   South Africa is a paradise of rolling mountains, vast plains, lush wetlands, coastal forests, barren deserts, safari lands, green winelands, mangrove swamps, and golden beaches. The wildlife is spectacular with many types of animals including elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo,

and penguins. The cities are also quite diverse with bustling Johannesburg at the country’s heart and cosmopolitan Cape Town sitting at the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

   The weather generally depends on the area of the country you’re in. However, typically it’s hot and sunny in the summers between December and April, and pretty mild in the winters between May and November.

   South Africa has become famous for its wines and the beautiful Cape Winelands is one of the most visited areas. It’s close to Cape Town and there are 13 different wine routes to explore. The area features rugged mountains, green valleys, quaint, historic towns, olive groves, and wonderful architecture, not to mention world-class wines. The area also boasts fine restaurants, art galleries, local craft shops, and historic monuments and museums. You can also enjoy exciting activities such as horseback riding, golf, fly-fishing, and paragliding. There are numerous wine and food festivals throughout the year.

   The historic and cultural city of Cape Town is quite cosmopolitan. You can get excellent views of the town and its lovely beaches from Lion’s Head and Table Mountain. It offers history, culture, scenery, and an excellent nightlife with many hotels located on the Atlantic Seaboard. Some of the other popular sites are Castle of Good Hope, the South African Museum and Planetarium, Greenmarket Square, St. George’s Cathedral, and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Robben Island, District Six Museum, Chapman's Peak, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Simonstown and Boulders Beach, and Cape Point.

   In Port Elizabeth you can visit Bayworld, Market Square, Donkin Reserve, St. George’s Park, Addo Elephant Park, Shamwari Game Reserve, Grahamstown, and Jeffrey’s Bay. The city of Durban is a coastal port with more beaches and seaside resorts and offers an exciting mix of cultures. Durban also offers Francis Farewell Square, uShaka Marine World, KwaMuhle Museum, Juma Masjid Mosque, Durban Botanic Gardens, the BAT Center, Zululand Battlefields, Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, Midmar Dam, and the Drakensberg Mountains.

   Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, while the Mpumalanga province offers rich wildlife, culture, history and natural beauty. It has many private luxury lodges and big game reserves. You can also visit Gold Reef City, the Newtown Cultural Precinct, Johannesburg Zoo, the Sterkfontein Caves, Hartbeespoort Dam, Warmbaths, Sun City and the Palace of the Lost City, SAB World of Beer, Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens, Melville, The Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, Hector Pieterson Memorial site and Museum, and the Cradle of Humankind and Maropeng Visitor Center.

   The Garden Route on the southern coast between Tstsikamma National Park and Mossel Bay is also popular with its resort towns, mountain ranges, indigenous forests, scenic lakes, secluded bays and sandy golden beaches.

   If you’re interested in wildlife and seeing the various landscapes in South Africa then you should head to Kruger National Park, which is the nation’s largest, oldest, and most popular wildlife conservation area. It’s filled with hundreds of species of mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians. It’s a great place for bush walks and safaris.

   There are several major airports in South Africa, including Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, and Port Elizabeth. You can also travel by sea as there are major ports in Cape Town, East London, Durban, and Port Elizabeth. You can travel by road from the countries of Lesotho, Botswana, Mozambique, Swaziland, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Internally, you can get around by air, rail, and road, with bus and taxi service being pretty good. Cars are also available for rent.

   When it comes to food, there’s a lot to choose from. Meat and barbecues are popular and the coastline provides fresh seafood. You can get cuisine from all over the world. Some of the best local dishes include spicy sausage, curried mince stew, spicy casserole, and dried meat. Local beers and wines are popular along with sherries and brandies.

   The nightlife’s hopping in most of the big cities. There are restaurants, cinemas, bars, nightclubs, theater, comedy clubs, live music venues, and an international jazz festival. Sports are very popular and most bars show soccer, rugby, and cricket.

   The country of South Africa has it all, from excellent beach resorts to spectacular scenery and wildlife. The nation is overflowing in history and culture and there are many activities for people of all ages and interests.
